The Suffolk breeding started in 1980, with animals brought from New Zealand , Canada and United States of America . We believed that it was not just enough to qualify the breeding, so in l988, Ronald Bertagnolli and the zootechnist Luiz Albert Fries, started the first genetic improvement program in cattle breeding, in the country. This program aims at improving genetics, informing visual scores, body structure and healthy sanity of the herd.
The EDP - Expected Difference of Progeny with ultra-tomography has been used at Butia since 1992 and that is the way Butia selects its herd today. Butia has in its herd 400 matrix. It's the only herd in Latin America which selects according to EDP and also the one that received most prizes at Expointer.
